Lorsque nous avons passé le pont, il faudra passer quelques gués (voir #2). Par temps normal, ceux-ci sont accessibles avec un véhicule léger. Nous traversons ensuite la Plaine du Champ de Bataille, puis accédons au col de Crève Cœur (ou col de Prony) où nous nous arrêtons pour admirer la vue sur la plaine et au loin sur la presqu’île de Nouméa. A découvrir ou redécouvrir…
Histoire : La plaine du champ de Bataille appartenait jadis aux tribus de Goro et de Tuauru et la tribu de l’Île des Pins venait là pour ramasser du bois. Les tribus s’y livraient des batailles mémorables.
Après une période d’exploitation forestière importante, la plaine a été replantée d’essences de kaoris et de pins faisant de cet endroit un site remarquable. Cette partie du Grand Sud fait l’objet d’un programme de reboisement. La plaine du Champ-de-Bataille s’étend sur 600 hectares avec 330 hectares de plantations. Dans les années 90, la principale essence plantée dans le Grand Sud était le pin des Caraïbes. Il n’est pas prévu de replanter cette espèce dans les nouvelles parcelles forestières du Grand Sud. Aujourd’hui, un programme annuel d’éradication du pin sur environ 50 hectares (hors périmètre de boisement) permet de valoriser le bois extrait en rondins. Dans les plantations récentes (à partir de 2000), les forestiers du département de la sylviculture et des sites dégradés de la province Sud se sont tournés vers des essences locales comme le Kaori, plusieurs espèces d’araucarias dont le pin colonnaire, le chêne gomme, et en petite quantité : le faux noyer, l’azou, le badamier et le tamanou. After crossing the bridge, we will ford some streams. You can ford them with a normal car in current weather. Then we will drive through ‘la Plaine des Lacs’ (Lakes Champaign), then drive in ‘col de Crève Cœur’ (Heartbreak Pass) with hard curves and we will stop at the top of the pass and have a beautiful view on the champaign and Noumea in the far background. This spot is to discover or again…
Memories : This champaign belong in the old times to Goro and Tuauru tribes and The Island of Pines tribe came there to pick up wood. These tribes gave them memorable fights.
This plain has been replanted after many years of forest exploitation, with kaoris and pines making a beauty of this area. This part of Grand Sud is subject to a reforestation plan. This plain is 600 ha (1483 acres) with 330 ha (815 acres) of trees planting. In the 90’s, the main tree to be planted was the Carribean tree. Nowadays this tree is not replanted but replaced with the kaori tree, many species of araucaria pines, oaks, and walnuts and azou and tamanou trees. (from Province Sud).

I added some distressing, shadows etc to my original pin-up painting to create this postcard.

I Recently had the chance to do another fixie or fixed gear bike shoot, with a good friend whom I’ve been promising to shoot since well, what seems like forever, we had bad weather and things got shuffled around a little but these are the results…
Cheers to Eric and the guys at Gear Brisbane for hooking us up with yet again some amazing bikes, we didn’t get a scratch on em, I promise. But Eric is a great guy always keen to help out and work on some cool new interesting projects no matter what they involve be it a few bikes or well (I’ll say the rest once I’ve finished working on the projects). You should go into the store if you are close to the Brisbane CBD, or visiting from out of town, its an amazing store and I guarantee you wont find another store like it anywhere in the world and for so many reasons…

Thanks to all the girls for putting up with me and the summer heat and lack of fresh air throughout the shoot due to the location, I’m sorry the weather turned and we couldn’t be out in the open. Thanks to Lewis for the million stupid questions you asked that probably extended the shoot to another half an hour, and for dabbing the sweat off of everyone when needed, you are definitely the weirdest most interesting assistant I have ever had on a shoot buddy…
